August was a very adventurous and successful racing month for Team Santa Fe. Lisa Barnes and Don Moden participated in the Four Winds USA Supreme Adventure Race, a 400+ mile expedition race in Idaho. Lisa and Don finished 1st overall in the 2 person category. Again this year, Team Santa Fe was well represented at the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race. Ries Robinson, Kim Bear and Jan Bear and George Broome participated, while Jennifer Beckley was there for her fourth consecutive year of helping get racers across the finish line. Everyone finished very strong, with Ries placing ! 28th overall, and Kim taking second in her age group. Barb Dutrow and Carl Gable participated in the Pikes Peak Marathon , and again Barb had a great race and won her age group, despite the unusually hot weather. On that same weekend, Cindy Gagnon participated in the Salomon X-Adventure Race, a 2 day staged Adventure Race, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Eric Jacobson, the newest Team Santa Fe member, finished in second place at the Michigan Bush Bash Adventure Race. Read all about these races in Team Santa Fe at the Races section.

The inaugural Discovery Channel World Championship Adventure Race is being held in Switzerland in early September. Team Santa Fe members Kim Bear , Jan Bear, and Todd Kurth are participating on Team Zimmer Orthopedics. Real-time web coverage of the race begin Thursday, August 30, and continue throughout the race. Web users followed the race's progress, and Team Zimmer Orthopedics in in one of two ways -- either via Discovery Channel's award-winning website, DISCOVERY.COM, or the official race website, ARWORLDCHAMPIONSHIP.COM.

Also coming up is the 2001 Eco-Challenge to be held in New Zealand in October. Read more on how TSF members are getting ready for this event, and other upcoming events in Team Santa Fe in Training section.

Team Santa Fe Will Conquer The Beast In August 2000

ADVENTURE RACING - Orienteering

Orienteering In adventure racing, just finding the finish line is part of the challenge.

To finish the course, teams will have to find their way across miles of glaciers and tundra and down icy rivers.

One mistake can take the team miles off course. And getting lost is not an option. There are no towns or villages along the course for refuge or directions.

There is only one road through part of the course, and helicopter access is limited. Being rescued is more of a challenge than finishing the race.
