Team Santa Fe In Training

8/05/2001
Three Peaks, NM, Trail Running Series
19 miles, 4400 vertical feet
Carl Gable, Barb Dutrow finished in 4:54:13.
Carl: 8th male overall
Barb: 1st masters woman, 2nd woman overall

Great run. Barb and Carl ran the same course one year ago and finished within 3 seconds of last years time! About 30 starters came out for the run, including Jan and Kim Bear and their teammates. The day was a picture perfect NM day, although clouds began to build around noon. The run begins at the Santa Fe Ski area, runs down to the Aspen Vista (AV) trail, up AV to the top of the ski hill, over to Pentitente Peak, Lake Peak, and up Santa Fe Baldy to come out the Windsor Trail. It is always a tough climb back out of the basin.

8/12/2001
Mt. Shavano Pk., 14,229 feet, training run
10 miles, 4800 vertical feet
Carl Gable, Barb Dutrow

Easy access from Santa Fe for a quick trip to a CO 14er. Steep, rocky trail makes the way up mostly power walking. We camped at the trailhead the night before and got an alpine start; up the peak in 2:30 hrs, down in 1:30, with 40 min at the summit enjoying the view.

8/26/01
5430 Ironman
(2.4m swim/112 bike/26.2m run)
Cindy Gagnon

As part of training for the Eco-challenge, Cindy Gagnon participated in the first 5430 Ironman in Boulder, Co. This Ironman is the highest Ironman (from an elevation perspective ) ever held . Although having a triathlon background, I had not participated in an Ironman distance race in over 5 years. Due to unusually hot weather,

100 degrees on race day, I had to drop out during the run, but still found this to be great training for adventure racing. I chose to ride my Lightspeed road bike, as opposed to my triathlon bike, due to the comfort of the ride, which was more inportant to me than speed.

7/22/2001
Latir Peak, NM Trail Running Series
Carl Gable, 1st place men masters, 2nd men overall

This is the first time this course has been part of the NM trail running series. Much of the trail above timberline is obscure because there is so little traffic in this part of northern NM.

Team Santa Fe Will Conquer The Beast In August 2000

ADVENTURE RACING - Orienteering

Orienteering In adventure racing, just finding the finish line is part of the challenge.

To finish the course, teams will have to find their way across miles of glaciers and tundra and down icy rivers.

One mistake can take the team miles off course. And getting lost is not an option. There are no towns or villages along the course for refuge or directions.

There is only one road through part of the course, and helicopter access is limited. Being rescued is more of a challenge than finishing the race.
