Breckenridge, CO.

Team Santa Fe members Don and Brenda Moden recently enjoyed four days of Cross Country skiing and Snowshoeing in Breckenridge, Colorado to celebrate the New Year. They are also preparing for the Mt. Taylor Winter Quadrathlon on February 17th in Grants, New Mexico.

Team Santa Fe GearThey were anxious to try out their Crescent Moon Permagrin 12 Snowshoes with direct-mounted Montrail TRS Comp shoes. This new set-up proved to work out great. The Crescent Moon snowshoes are light and sturdy. The Montrail TRS Comp are rugged and cushioned without being too heavy. Thorlo socks provided additional cushioned comfort.

While trekking and jogging through the forest, their Ultimate Directions waist packs carried fluids and snacks to keep them energized during their workout. Outfitted in layers to adjust for warmer or cooler weather, their Pearl Izumi vests, gloves, tights, tops and hats provided the right amount of protection. Don's Native Eyewear glasses were suitable for any weather with their interchangeable lens. To protect her hands, which are prone to being cold, Brenda used either her Pearl Izumi Lobster gloves or the Pearl Izumi Sirocco gloves with Hind DryLete gloves underneath for additional warmth and to wick moisture.

Although most of the same gear was used for Cross Country skiing as Snowshoeing, a few additional items came in handy. Brenda used Hydropel, as usual, to protect her feet from blisters. She also found it to protect her lips and soothe dry spots on her hands due to the extremely dry Alpine air. To protect her ears from the cold, but allow ventilation during workouts, Brenda uses her Outdoor Research fleece headband with Windstopper. The Velcro closure makes it adjustable to the perfect fit.

As usual, the snow and cold were a wonderful experience for Don and Brenda who live in Phoenix, Arizona. They even braved some of the "Black" trails at the Breckenridge Nordic Center.

Team Santa Fe Will Conquer The Beast In August 2000

ADVENTURE RACING - Orienteering

Orienteering In adventure racing, just finding the finish line is part of the challenge.

To finish the course, teams will have to find their way across miles of glaciers and tundra and down icy rivers.

One mistake can take the team miles off course. And getting lost is not an option. There are no towns or villages along the course for refuge or directions.

There is only one road through part of the course, and helicopter access is limited. Being rescued is more of a challenge than finishing the race.
