Team Santa Fe was well represented at the 2001 Raid the North Extreme Adventure Race held June 17-22 in Newfoundland, Canada. Three teams with TSF members participated in this expedition race along with many of the top adventure racing teams in the world. The first team was Team Santa Fe, comprised of Todd Kurth, Jan Bear, Kim Bear, and Walter White. The second team, Team Michigan Adventure - Santa Fe, had TSF member Cindy Gagnon. Racing with three guys from Team Mich-Adventure, and the third team, Team Colorado -Santa Fe had TSF member Daphne Young captaining a team of guys from Colorado and Texas. One thing that became apparent to us after racing on three different teams is that every team in an adventure race experience is unique. Depending on the route your team chooses, and the time of day (day/night) you hit an area, the conditions are quite different. Read more on each team‚s experience in the Team Santa Fe at the Races section, and you will wonder if we were in the same race.

TSF member Jonathon Redfern also captained a team at inaugural Armed Forces Eco Challenge in Alaska. Read all about his in Team Santa Fe at the Races section.

TSF member Slate Stern continues his quest to climb the highest peaks in the world. In this newsletter, we have his report from his travels to Denali in May and his travels to Castensz Pyramid. Read about Slate's Adventures in the Team Santa Fe at High Altitudes section below.

Team Santa Fe Will Conquer The Beast In August 2000

ADVENTURE RACING - Orienteering

Orienteering In adventure racing, just finding the finish line is part of the challenge.

To finish the course, teams will have to find their way across miles of glaciers and tundra and down icy rivers.

One mistake can take the team miles off course. And getting lost is not an option. There are no towns or villages along the course for refuge or directions.

There is only one road through part of the course, and helicopter access is limited. Being rescued is more of a challenge than finishing the race.
