November 2001

As the end of the year approaches we would like to thank all of our sponsors for helping us with such a successful year. Also this year Team Santa Fe received race sponsorship from two major corporations for the Discovery Channel World Championship Adventure Race in Switzerland and the Eco Challenge in New Zealand. Thank you to both Zimmer Corporation and Stryker Corporation.

Team Santa Fe members participated in five expedition length races this year. This month's newsletter contains our Eco Challenge report penned by Kim Bear.

Other events including the Southern Traverse and USARA Nationals were held last month but we will save their reports for the December newsletter.

Team members are already planning for next year‚s races. The calendar is not yet set but please keep an eye on our web site and your e-mail for updates. Our web site will be revised next year so keep an eye open for that. Sponsor information continues to be available via the web site. In addition, TSF T-shirts are available through the web site.

Thanks to our great TSF sponsors, we hope to continue our Team success!!!!

Upcoming TSF Events:

  • Mount Taylor Winter Quadrathon, Feb. 16, 2002. 46-mile race that includes biking, running, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

  • Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race, August 2002.

  • Lots more to come as the year unfolds.

Walter White

Walter White's racing season was cut short by the 9/11/2001 incident; he works as head of security at one our nation's large airports and is the incoming chairman of the Airports Council International - North America Public Safety and Security Committee. He is also one of two airport representatives on the FAA‚s Security Equipment Integrated Product Team. This team is tasked with procuring and deploying explosive detection systems at our nation's airports. He reports that it is not really athletic but is consuming a lot of time just like adventure racing. He plans to return to the racing circuit next year.

Team Santa Fe Will Conquer The Beast In August 2000

ADVENTURE RACING - Orienteering

Orienteering In adventure racing, just finding the finish line is part of the challenge.

To finish the course, teams will have to find their way across miles of glaciers and tundra and down icy rivers.

One mistake can take the team miles off course. And getting lost is not an option. There are no towns or villages along the course for refuge or directions.

There is only one road through part of the course, and helicopter access is limited. Being rescued is more of a challenge than finishing the race.
