"The Wall" 30K State Championships, Barb Dutrow
Jan. 20, 2002
Jefferson, LA

What better way to get back into training than to sign up for a race? The holidays are, for me, a time of inconsistent training, even though there should be plenty of time. To jump-start my spring training, I signed up for a 30K race.

At race start, the day was perfect, temperatures in the mid-40's, overcast sky. The racecourse was on top of the Mississippi levee and very exposed to the elements. Recently, the shell and dirt surface had been paved, so the course was flat and fast. With the 10k starting together with the 30K, the starting pace was rapid. My goal was to use it as a hard training run. Running out, the wind was at our backs, so it felt OK. At the turn around, there was an abrupt transition to head winds. A storm was rolling in from the Gulf; by mile 15 the winds were very strong and the temperature had dropped. Fortunately there were a sufficient number of people on the course so that you could run with someone or pass someone (was a definite boost in the final couple of miles). By the time I finished, I was cold.

I had forgotten how much it hurts to run hard when you are not well trained! It was a good race for a fast paced run.

Finish: 2:24, 3rd overall female, 1st Master.

Team Santa Fe Will Conquer The Beast In August 2000

ADVENTURE RACING - Orienteering

Orienteering In adventure racing, just finding the finish line is part of the challenge.

To finish the course, teams will have to find their way across miles of glaciers and tundra and down icy rivers.

One mistake can take the team miles off course. And getting lost is not an option. There are no towns or villages along the course for refuge or directions.

There is only one road through part of the course, and helicopter access is limited. Being rescued is more of a challenge than finishing the race.
