Desert Classic 1/2 Marathon
Scottsdale, AZ
Feb. 17 2002

Place Name Age Div/Tot Sex No. Gun time Pace Chip time
49 Barbara Dutrow 45 1/24 F 630 1:35:45 7:19 1:35:23
52 Carl Gable 43
12/42
M 752 1:36:20 7:21 1:35:59

Things to remember for next time. If Barb is training for the Boston marathon and you are not, watch out when she says
it will just be a tempo run. Also remember that pony tails bobbing 100 m ahead will motivate Barb to run negative splits.
The translation of this is that at mile 7 Barb decided to up the pace by :15 per mile for miles 7 and 8 to catch and pass 3 or 4 women who were ahead of us, but my legs, trained for skiing the steeps at Taos were not up to that task. Barb opened a gap that she held to the finish.

It was a well organized race put on by Arizona Road Racers. It had electronic chip timing with 433 1/2 marathon finishers and 253 marathon finishers. It was a perfect day, overcast, 45-55 degrees, zero wind on a course of flat straight country roads with no traffic and a bit of dirt trail next to the canal.

Mt Taylor Winter Quadrathlon
Grants, NM.
February 16, 2002

February 16, 2002 was the 19th anniversary of Grant’s Mt Taylor Winter Quadrathlon. There were a record number of 682 entrants with 391 soloists. From Team Santa Fe were soloists: Kim and Jan Bear, Gary Johnson, and Jen and Ries Robinson. Jen and Ries had organized Quad training weekends, the Governor been in heavy training (except the legislature was in full session) and Jan had never stopped training since returning from the Eco Challenge in November. There was a friendly competition between the three men with "the gauntlet being thrown down!" It would turn out to be very close and exciting. Jen’s goal for 2002 was to go faster and Kim knew there were only 3 women in her age group last year so wanted to medal and take off 5 minutes. The day was sunny and warm at the start in the town of Grants, elevation of 6,500 feet. We would travel 22 miles to the spectacular 11,301-foot summit of Mt. Taylor and then return back to the finish line in Grants.

The "friendly" competition between Jan, Ries, and Gary: Leading in the 13 miles of bicycling up to the top of La Jara Mesa was Ries; Gary led on the 5 miles of running; Jan took over the lead on the 2 miles of cross-country skiing, 1 mile of snowshoeing and stood first on the top of Mt. Taylor holding onto to the lead with the fastest time snowshoeing down; Gary had the fastest time skiing down; Jan still led on the run down and Ries once again had the fastest time on the bike section into town. The end result: Jan Bear 4:36:47, Gary Johnson 4:40:36 and Ries Robinson 4:48:33. It was "neck-in-neck" the whole race with Gary deciding to use NOT use skins which tired him out (lucky for Jan). The times were very close and Jan will just have to watch out next year!

Not only did Jen go faster, she went really faster. She took off almost 20 minutes off her time and placed 5th in her age group. Her bike up was 5 minutes faster and her cross-country ski time up really improved with her new skis! Kim completed her goal of taking off 5 minutes and even though the slowest of everyone got a second place in her age group. It pays to age when you are a woman!

Team Santa Fe Will Conquer The Beast In August 2000

ADVENTURE RACING - Orienteering

Orienteering In adventure racing, just finding the finish line is part of the challenge.

To finish the course, teams will have to find their way across miles of glaciers and tundra and down icy rivers.

One mistake can take the team miles off course. And getting lost is not an option. There are no towns or villages along the course for refuge or directions.

There is only one road through part of the course, and helicopter access is limited. Being rescued is more of a challenge than finishing the race.
