Jan Bear 3:27:57 14/96 45-49 M, 139 overall
Kim Bear 4:18:02 14/71  45-49 F, 164 overall

Jan and Kim Bear ran this race for the first time.  Historically, the race began in 1974 when one of the locals, training for the Pikes Peak Marathon ran from Ouray via the pass to Telluride (2:32:57), after a day's work at the Camp Bird mine. A chance encounter with some Telluride people resulted in a formal race being established. It’s been going on every year since then!

The race route began on Main Street, Ouray, then 5.5 miles up to the Lower Camp Bird mine; then 4.5 miles past the Upper Camp Bird to the Imogene Pass.  Once over the top it’s 7.1 miles down the Tomboy road into Telluride.

Kim and Jan were excited because they would now see the parts of Imogene that they had traveled in the Primal Quest Adventure race in the daylight.  The scenery was supposed to be spectacular.  The morning start was in cloudy weather, which turned into drizzle, rain and fog.  At Imogene Pass the temperature was 26 degrees with the wind chill factor.  It was cold and runners were eager to get into Telluride. It was “miserable” and the best view was of the puddles in the road.  Jan and Kim both finished 14th in their respective age groups.  1100 racers started the race.  It was very impressive that 1054 racers FINISHED…it was miserable.  We had a great time and hope to go back next year, so we can finally see the views!

Thank goodness for GoLite, it kept us warm.
