Kim and Jan Bear
This year Grants, NM celebrated it's 20th annual race up and down Mt. Taylor.
It is a 44-mile mulit-sport race that includes road biking, running, cross-country
skiing and snowshoeing. This year race winners are the “who is who” of adventure
racing, Mike Kloser and Danelle Ballengee. It was a beautiful day in Grants,
sun with a little wind but lots of fresh snow. For Kim and I it was our 15th
consecutive Mt. Taylor race. It's always fun to head to Grants to visit with
racers and friends from Grants. The community of Grants puts on one of the
premier one day multi-sport races around, the volunteers are great and the
whole city it there to support you. Mt. Taylor is a great opportunity to
use lots of gear over a short time; I used my Litespeed Classic road bike,
AXO bike shoes, Montrail running shoes, Leki poles, Crescent Moon snowshoes,
ThorLo socks, Polar HRM, GoLite shell, Lowe Alpine gloves and fleece, Bolle
sunglasses, CW-X tights, Hydropel and Terry saddle, I'm sure I forgot something.
The race started at 9AM and already the day was beautiful temperature about
freezing for a quick 1 hour 13-mile bike ride, then on to a 5-mile run on
a wet muddy then icy road, followed by a great ski on two miles of fresh
snow then the short hike on snowshoes to the 11301 foot summit of Mt. Taylor.
This was followed by a quick look at the scenic view and then heading back
down the mountain doing all the events in reverse order. My Polar HRM showed
a time of 4:38 with a total climb of 5239 feet and average HR of 150 BPM,
Kim’s time was 6:05. We both finished 2nd in our respective age group categories.
This year we missed several other TSF members who usually do the race. We hope to see them back in Grants next year.
