December 13 2003 Nordic Ski Loops, Santa Fe, NM
Kim and Jan Bear
The day was cold, about 10 degrees but clear and a fresh snow of six inches
had fallen the day before the race. Kim and I met Dave Wykoff the trail
master for the Nordic ski loops at 7:30AM to mark and groom the trail. The
conditions were better than last year despite all the snow actually only
coming in the last week. There was a nice base and some fresh snow as well
making the times this year slower that last when the race was held on a very
dense packed base. With the cold there was also a steady breeze so the
number of racers hanging around was minimized, everyone was staying in their
cars to stay warm. We had a good turn out despite the very cold weather,
concern about snow up until just a couple days before the race and Santa Fe
Ski Basin opening just a mile down the road. There were almost equal numbers
of racers in the 5K and 10K races. Due to our race sponsors Crescent Moon
Snowshoes, Montrail, SealSkinz, Dermatone and Boulder Bars the race was a
great success. We had several racers take advantage of the rental snowshoes
from Crescent Moon who had donated samples of their Gold Series 12's, their
running and racing shoes. Everyone who used the Crescent Moon 12's had
nothing but positive comments about the way the snowshoes felt, specific
comments included how easy and fast the binding system worked. At the awards
ceremony which was quick due to the cold everyone was surprised at the great
awards and giveaways. Thanks to the Santa Fe Striders Running Club, Dave
Wykoff and our prize sponsors Crescent Moon, Montrail and SealSkinz for such
a great event. The official results will are available on the Santa Fe
Striders web site http://www.santafestriders.org
