The morning of race day was cold and snowy. We couldn't have asked for a
better day. The day before the race we; Kris Kern, David Walcott and I as
the race promoters were very worried about the lack of snow. We spent some
time prepping the course and we ended up getting snow all night. Race day
was great, as was the course. The choices for the race were snowshoe only (4
miles), X-country ski only (6 miles) or X-country ski and snowshoe (8 miles
ski and 3 miles snowshoe). There was a good turn out for the event and 18
tough people headed out on the full course. The sights were spectacular as
the course began at about 9,900 feet and topped out at 11,400 feet making
the first half a grunt up-hill, followed by a quick down in the cold. The
snow continued to come down keeping the temperature low and the sun never
broke thru the clouds. The top finisher was Lyle Amer finishing in 1 hour
and 40 minutes. It was a great first time event and the Santa Fe Striders
and Team Santa Fe plan to put on both this event and The Santa Fe Snowshoe
Classic again next winter. Thanks to our great sponsors for the event:
Crescent Moon Snowshoes, CW-X, SealSkinz, Montrail, Boulder Bars and
Dermatone.
TSF sponsor gear used, Bolle, GoLite, CamelBak, SealSkinz, Montrail, CW-X,
Boulder Bar, Dermatone, Crescent Moon Snowshoes, Leki and Lowe Alpine.
The official results will are available on the Santa Fe
Striders web site http://www.santafestriders.org

Monitor Staff Report:Adventure racing challenges the body, mind and soul,
in beautiful but rugged places around the world. Carl Gable of Santa Fe has
raced on at least 4 continents. At 8 p.m. on Wednesday Jan. 21 at Fuller
Lodge, he will speak to the Los Alamos Mountaineers on "Adventure Racing,
With an Emphasis on Teamwork."
A highlight of his career was the Primal Quest Adventure Race in the San
Juan Mountains ofColorado during July 2002. His team (including Barb Dutrow,
Joel Krypel and Brad Fawcett) finished in 6 days, 10 hours, and 35 minutes.
This was an "expedition" length race of 251 miles, with an advertised
elevation gain of 68,000 ft., in which the four racers must stay together
and finish together. Racers navigated their way using only their map skills
(no GPS allowed) by mountain biking (151 miles), trekking (68 miles),
fixed ropes, and kayaking (32 miles).
