Due to the location in San Diego, I did not have my usual teammates around so I
entered the Desert Rage race a soloist. The main goal of the race was to do some
gear checking and map reading before the upcoming United States Adventure
Racing Championships in Santa Barbara. The race was a well organized 6 to 12
hour race at Lake Hodges. The race has some fun elements that I had not seen
before. The race started with an orienteering section where one picked up UTM
points and map for the second portion of the race. Following the orienteering
section we had to plot points then head out on the kayaks. The kayak section
involved several stops where we got out and ran to check points. Some of the
maps were standard topographic maps while others were satellite images. The
next section was a bike section with multiple check points. I was unable to fine
CP 17 and due to a flight out of town in the evening opted to skip this check point
and move one. The final section was a remote navigation section. If you were on
a team, one team member had the map and a walkie-talkie while the other
teammate had only a walkie-talkie. The goal was to navigate your teammate
through a simple orienteering course. It looked like the teams were having fun
with this new event. As a soloist, I had the opportunity to practice my orienteering
skills.
Race summary: Doing the race as a soloist was an interesting experience but I
will look for my teammates in the future. The Desert Rage race was well
organized and fun event. It served as a good preparation for the USARA
Nationals.

Team Santa Fe Masters: 1st in masters division 28:03; 11th overall/48 teams.

This was a 30 hour race that we had looked forward to finally being able to race
with Ries. It was hosted by the Fess Parker resort which was located right on the
beach in Santa Barbara, CA. I drove out with our 18 year old daughter so we
didn't have to deal with the airlines due to equipment and bikes. Our excitement
began as we drove into Los Angeles and got a flat tire on our truck on the
freeway with 6 lanes of bumper to bumper traffic. We were proud that we got it
changed with the bike rack and equipment to maneuver and no outside help.
The resort was beautiful. We got checked in to the hotel and then to the race.
The next day the start really began at around 5 am as we had to place our
paddling gear on the beach. After we readied our boats, we then rode our bikes
along the coast with the rest of our gear to the actual start. At 7 am as the sun
rose the race began with a 6 mile coasteering section. The weather was
beautiful. We jogged back to the Fess Parker resort to get into our inflatable 2
man kayaks.
Ries and I immediately flipped as we tried to get thru the surf. It actually felt
good as we were fairly warm from the run. Jan, alone in his boat, successfully
broke through the waves making it look easy. We paddled about 4 miles north to
the first checkpoint and then headed south back to the start of the coasteering
section about 10 miles down the coast.
From there we got on our bikes and climbed 3,000 feet up Romero Canyon. We
began on pavement which changed to dirt roads and then to single track and
switchbacks. At the top we dropped out bikes and headed out on the trek.
These checkpoints could be reached in any order and our plan seemed to work
well for us. We even found the misplaced checkpoint 6 which made us happy.
We already knew from our friend from Bagelworks that many teams had not
found it. We were feeling pretty good as we returned to bikes as the sun began
to set. We then spent the night on single-track. Ries had not used the Princeton
Tec light and talked all night long about how impressed he was with this light. He
will not use anything else. He never had to change his batteries the whole night.
We all used this light and appreciate how easy it is to change the batteries when
needed as well as the feature of adjusting the light to be brighter only when
needed. Even with our good lights, it took a few hours to really enjoy the
technical riding, but by 4 am we were all enjoying the single-track. It was nice to
not know how exposed the trails were.
As the sun rose, we looked down on Santa Barbara for a spectacular view of
cloud cover making you feel you were on top of the world. Jan started to feel
sick. He really fought hard with vomiting. We were concerned about his
hydration, but he seemed to hold it together. It was a quick bike down to Santa
Barbara to the orienteering course/mini-rogaine placed in a park close to USCB.
Jan revived doing the mini-rogaine as we found all the checkpoints; we were told
that we were the first of the Masters teams. From there we rode back into Santa
Barbara to the finish at the Fess Parker Resort. Throughout the race we had
random gear checks including one right before the finish line. We finished
without any penalties in first place for masters and 11th overall. We were very
happy with our finish.

range with up to 60 Lumens of light, regulated LED's, 5 modes, heat regulation
and a battery power meter. It has a burn time of 72 hours and is waterproof.

Red Course 1st Place 40+

What a great day with warm sun and almost no wind. The course was long with
16 CP's and some were fairly well hidden as I walked with in 10-15 feet of three
and never saw them until I came back in the opposite direction. I'm sure that I did
more distance than was necessary. My time was two and a half hours. As usual it
was great orienteering practice and the NM Orienteers always put on a top notch
race.

Canyon. The group consisted of Bill Geist, David Coblentz, Tom Garrison,
Bill Carey, Carl Gable, Dan Hadlich, Janet Trujillo, Eric Irving, Jason Halladay.
Some started at 3am, some at 4am and some at 5am. The various groups finished
in times ranging from 10h 11m for David Coblentz and Jason Halladay, 13h
11m for Bill Carey and Carl Gable and a bit longer for some of the others.
It was a perfect day for it and fun was had by all.
