Baton Rouge Beach Marathon and Half
Baton Rouge, LA

Barb Dutrow 1:39 3rd F overall; 1st Master F
By Barb Dutrow
Nearly 800 runners gathered for a
mass start of the 12th annual Baton Rouge Beach marathon and half. At 7am,
the clear day was cold (for Baton Rouge) with temperatures hovering near
freezing. The 13 mile course begins near the Baton Rouge "Beach" at University
Lakes runs through the campus of Louisiana State University including up
one of the only hills in the city, around the University Lakes, and through
a residential neighborhood up over an overpass to return to the Lakes. These
two "hills" punctuate the flat course and are about the only rises in the
entire city, other than levees. Half marathoners completed a single loop,
marathoners completed two loops.
I ran the half marathon with many other runners. There were plenty
of water stops and other runners to keep one going. My pace was consistent
such that I passed several other runners in the last few miles, and a friend
about 10 yards from the finish line. I finished in 1:39 for 3rd Female, 1st
Masters Female but do not know my overall place. We decided that the really
fast women must have run the marathon!
The most spectacular aspects of the race were
the nearly 200 great white pelicans swimming in the lakes. Their yearly return
signals winter and with the high humidity and calm lakes, it was incredibly
picturesque.
Thanks to Polar Heart Rate systems
for keeping me going, to Thorlo for padding my feet and to CW-X for perfect
clothing for the conditions.
Santa Fe Snow Shoe Classic
5k and 10k Race

Norski Trails near the Santa Fe Ski Basin
By Kim Bear
Team Santa Fe again helped sponsor this annual event which is organized
by the Santa Fe Striders. Team Santa Fe is in charge of the prizes and again
this year we had great prizes from Crescent Moon Snow Shoes, Montrail, Seal
Skinz and Bike ∓ Sport. The course had a little snow in most areas,
but it was bare in others. The weather was beautiful and warm. The race was
fast and fun. I ended up doing 2 laps for a 10K. It was fun as I also got
to be the photographer taking the pressure off of my performance. One of
the racers was having problems with her snowshoes, so I lent her my Crescent
Moon snow shoes which are easy to remove as well as run in. I got to run
in my Montrail's which worked well in the scanty snow. I finished smiling
enjoying the morning race. At the finish line, the Santa Fe Striders provided
everyone with hot chocolate and goodies. This is definitely a fun race that
everyone ends up driving back down the mountain with some new shwag!
