With all the snow in New Mexico, this seemed like a good race to begin the year. We drove our bikes out to San Diego, stayed with family and the next morning got to Vail Lake before their 7:30 am mandatory check in. It was 20 degrees out; everyone was cold until the sun came up.

We had done the 24 hours of Temecula the past 2 years, so we were familiar with the area. They changed the route somewhat which made it more interesting. I thought it was more fun because some of the sections that had scared me in the past were removed. The route was around 10.3 miles with the major hike a bikes still on the course. There was 1,498 feet of ascent per lap. The temperature came up to the 50's with a little wind which made for a comfortable day of riding. My goal was to complete 8 laps. Lights went on the bikes at 4:30 and it got dark quickly. On the 7th lap, I caught a rock with my front tire which threw me on my back with my bike landing on my sternum. It took me awhile to recover and get my breathing back to normal. I finally was able to ride/walk my bike to the finish line, but had to call it a race. I was the only woman in the sport division so I was grouped with all the women. I came in 5th of the 7 women doing the solo division. This included 3 pros, 2 experts and 1 single speed.

Jan had a great race and was able to complete 9 laps, giving him second place in the masters division for solo men. He was racing against a good friend Dale Blankenship who has partnered with us in adventure races in the past so they put the hammer down and worked pretty hard all day. Jan was happy to beat Dale on this day!

The race director has made this into a series changing the name from the 12 hours of Temecula to the 12 hours of So Cal or the Southern California State endurance series. These races will include marathon distances and 12 hour race formats. The races will span southern California from San Diego to Santa Barbara.

This was a fun race even if I did fall. Jan ended up winning the spinergy wheel set in the raffle as well as a water purifier. They had great raffle items. We are going to try to do some other races in this series.
