Pedal Queens #5: 3rd place/ 6 teams: 33:31.2
By Kim Bear
This was my first team time trial. We had practiced the weekend before
and I knew I had a problem staying with my team of 3 women going up the big
hill on this road. I had just raced at the Old Pueblo 24 hour mountain bike
race, so I was hoping my legs were still recovering. With another weeks
rest, my goal was to stay with my team and not get dropped. However, only
2 riders needed to finish. We discussed strategy and they felt I would still
help them as a team even if I was unable to stay with them on the hill.

We started out working our pace line and stayed together until the big hill.
I got dropped and immediately went into "individual time trial" mode. I
worked to catch a couple of teams in front of me, but never saw my team again.
I still enjoyed the event as I am learning to be a good teammate. My team
ended up in 3rd. What a great experience for a first team time trial.
The Hillsboro Road Race,
New Mexico Road Series (NMRS) #1

Kim Bear 13th/28 women
By Kim Bear
This was
my first road race. It was a 35 mile course which leads out on rolling hills
from Hillsboro toward Lake Valley and back to Hillsboro up to Kingston.
My goals were to not get dropped on the first hill and to try to stay with
my time trial captain, Karen Ortiz.
The start was on a hill and I immediately was dropped. I just couldn't
keep with that fast group. I felt alone and began to think I was like "little
Miss Sunshine", the movie where the little girl is out of her league with
the real beauty contestants. I made myself feel better by realizing what
a great work out I was getting and kept my heart rate sub lactate. There
was a headwind just to challenge me a little more. After about 15 minutes,
I heard someone coming up behind me. The man was wearing a Santa Fe Bike
and Sport jersey. I was very happy as he worked with me as well as a competitor
from the women's cycling team from El Paso. In the distance, I saw pink.
We finally pulled up to Jill and Caroline, my 2 teammates. I was so happy
to be back in the race. We picked up Karen and worked to get back to Hillsboro.
Jill taught me strategy and I ended up coming in 13 out of 28 women.
Road racing is like adventure racing. Anything can happen and you just need to keep going. I am excited to do another race.

Team Santa Fe Dirtgirlz
Angie Cline, Helen Morrell, Cindy Arbogast, Debbie Cantrell, 4 person female, open team, 11th place, 11:11:19
by Angie Cline
This race was so much FUN! I was a little nervous because it has been
only 6 months since my injuries.(broken pelvis, ribs, etc) Helen and I trained
with two of our friends at Cochiti, in the snow, during February and March
preparing for the race. Cindy Arbogast and Debbie Cantrell had never kayaked
or rappelled. I was not sure that I could handle a full days activity. We
agreed that our primary goals were to be safe, have fun and finish all the
elements in 12 hours. We were the only 4 person female team which was quite
noticeable in a division of all male teams. We started out with rain and
mud which resulted in a minor mechanical problem. We recovered quickly and
hustled in the pouring rain and snow to the first time cut off. We dropped
our bikes and ran back up the canyon to the 275' rapell. At the bottom, got
back on our bikes and pedaled back to the Colorado River and jumped in our
boats. A long paddle back to the start, we were greeted by other racers "
the girlz made it! "We met great people from all over the country and met
all of our goals. We all worked hard and are ready for another adventure!
Thanks to Leki for the trekking poles. I would not have made the trek/run
without them. They were light and collapsed small enough to fit in my hydration
pack. Thanks to Women's Adventure Magazine for getting out team shirts to
us on time! Our next Adventure Race is in Buena Vista , Colorado.

Absa Cape Epic 2007,
The Magical & Untamed African MTB Race
Western Cape Region, South Africa
March 24-31, 2007
8 day staged race, 886 kilometers, 15,045 meters climbing

Jan Bear and Gary Johnson 74th/155 pairs master men. Total time: 56:17.03
Kim Bear and Deb Werenko 12th/18 pair's women. Total time: 65:35.45

The Cape Epic is an 8-day staged mountain bike race in Western Cape Region
of South Africa. We were lucky enough to be selected by lottery to participate
in this well organized race. It gave us almost 900 kilometers of riding
with 15,000 meters of climbing. This would be Gary and Jan's third stage
race together and Kim and Deb's first time to race 8 days together. The rules
of these type races require that you stay with in 2 minutes of your partner
at all times for safety. The course was fun and 95% rideable. The race route
began in Knysna and ended near Cape Town in Lourensford all along the Western
Cape. Each day had about 2000 meters of climbing, for you feet people that
is 6562 feet, and was about 110 KM long which is 68.3 miles. The routes consisted
of some pavement, dirt roads, jeep tracks and abandoned jeep tracks. The
weather was HOT, up to 40 deg. Celsius or 104 deg Fahrenheit. The vegetation
ranged from fruit tree and grape orchards, to pine forests to desert and
of course some very dense near jungle like vegetation on the coast line which
is where we began and ended day seven also on the coast in Kleinmond. There
were over 1,100 riders from all over the world in this event. We were also
lucky enough to be able to sleep every night in a bed at a B&B, home,
or inn as compared to the majority of the riders who slept in tents every
night. We were also assigned a South African "host" named Leo who would make
sure we made it the start everyday and picked us up at the finish. The richness
of this experience was staying with local families and "really seeing" South
Africa. We had many conversations with Leo learning about South Africa,
its politics and its people.
Jan Bear, Deb Werenko, Kim Bear and Gary Johnson at the start of day 1 Cape Epic
The race was long every day, but we eagerly looked forward to exploring
the next town with its uniqueness. One night we stayed at the top of a mountain
overlooking a valley and the next we stayed in a small cabin in a valley
next to a duck pond. After riding dusty double track roads which traveled
through animal reserves, ascended mountain tops and led us through local
villages where children greeted us with "give me five" hands we always looked
forward to seeing Leo! It was an experience we will never forget.
We all finished the race. Deb and I got to experience the stress of finishing
the last day with only 7 minutes remaining before the cut off. She had gotten
sick the night before, but still rode determined to FINISH!
