On the drive to Gallup from Santa Fe Friday night I was worried as it was
snowing heavily as I passed the continental divide; an unusually sloppy low-
pressure system had poked into the state. I thought I would be in for a miserable
race as had occurred a couple years earlier when the wind was howling and the
snow falling but after a cold first two laps it turned into a great day. The weather
dumped enough moisture to firm up the sandy, challenging 13-mile High-Desert
Trail loop for prime racing conditions. The trail conditions were conducive to good
times out on the course and because the race went counterclockwise this year
the laps seemed extra fast. The course was awesome as usual with swooping
stretches of single-track, spates of slick rock, tight turns and sprinklings of
technical challenges. Participation in the Dawn 'Til Dusk race has increased
greatly two years ago when Ries and I did it as a male pair, now there are more
categories and a lot more racers if the size of the race village is indicative of
number of racers. The three of us all had a great day in the saddle despite sore
bottoms as we had only arrived back from the Cape Epic a week earlier.

Kim Bear 8/26 age group finish 14:03:09
By Kim Bear
This was my second year to do an Ironman. I really enjoyed last year and looked
forward to the same course. TThis year I was a minute slower on my 2.4 mile
swim, 22 minutes slower on 112 mile bike. There was a strong headwind which
made the downhill seem like an uphill. Tumble weeds blew into me. I had not had
any time to train for the marathon, so was very surprised to take off time on my
26.2 miles of running. I was 7 minutes faster for my overall time. The other
satisfying part of this race was that my brother finished it this year!
I really like this race. In my mind it is a 5 star race with so much support that you
can't help but finish. The crowd is supportive and the race management is very
organized and professional. I look forward to participating again next year.

The first of the "New Mexico off road series" (#1 and #2) was held in Socorro.
On Saturday, we climbed to the South Baldy which was approximately 8.3 miles
long climbing nearly 4000 feet to the 10700' summit. We went all the way to the
summit where the wind chill factor was in the negative degrees. There were
approximately 17 women at the start. I came in 1st in the sport category and Jan
came in 1st in the expert men 50+ category. It was very cold. What a ride…I
mean climb!
The second day was the Cerrillos del Coyote. The first leg went east on the
Quebradas Road, over rolling hills, giving the pack a little time to break up. Then
you rode south on rough two-track roads, crossing a number of arroyos. This led
you to single-track over two hogback ridges, returning for a short time to a road,
then back to the "Madre" single-track. The Madre, used in the races over the last
two years, turns north, and returns to the start. The Sport course was 30 km
long, i.e., two loops and the expert course was 45 km or 3 loops.
Jan came in first for his category and I came in 5th in the sport category. I had
several mechanical issues including a jammed chain and 2 broken spokes. Jan
broke his pedal. This course was rougher than it seemed!
Overall or omnium results: Jan is in 1st 50+ Expert and I am in 2nd for
Sport.

High Altitude Classic Mountain Bike Race

Cloudcroft, NM: 8,663 feet
The race was to begin at 10 am. Each lap was to be about 9 miles. At 9:30 am it
was raining, lightening and thundering. I was hoping the race would be cancelled.
We began to pull out all of rain gear as well as warm stuff. Everyone looked a
little miserable standing in the rain as the experts voted to ride 2 laps instead of
their normal 3 laps. I was looking forward to voting for 1 lap of riding. I had just
pre-ridden about 50 feet of single track and my tires could barely turn because of
all the mud packed into the tread. This was not going to be a pretty race. At 10
am they started the race with the experts. The sport category never got to vote
about laps, so we also did 2 laps. As soon as the first group left the start line, the
rain, lightening and thunder completely stopped!
Jan and Gary were riding expert 50+ category, Deb Werenko was riding expert
and I was riding sport. Team Santa Fe was well represented. The course was
slick and I immediately skidded out of the switch back turns. On the second lap, I
was more cautious. The roots and rocks were also slippery making it a
challenging course. I passed 2 women in front of me on the first 5 miles of lap
one. At mile 8, you start up a long climb. It was there that I was passed (like I
was standing still), by a roadie veteran who is even one year older than me. I
never saw her again! After the second lap, I was happy to see Deb and Jan
waiting for me at the finish line.
This is a fun race in a beautiful area. This course is a lot of single track and
would probably have been a lot faster if it wasn't wet. It was worth the drive to
Cloudcroft and I am glad we didn't bail.
