Breckenridge, CO.
July 20-21, 2007
Team Santa Fe Bear Pair, Jan and Kim Bear
Finish Time: 22 hours and 10 minutes, 2nd Coed Pairs
By Kim Bear
The race began at midnight on Friday at he Frisco Nordic Center with a short run
to the marina where we picked up our boats.(just like last year) We made it back
to the marina around 3:00 am and then proceeded to the orienteering section on
the peninsula. We had 3 hours to get 30 checkpoints. Each checkpoint missed
would bring a 10 minute penalty. Each minute after 3 hours would earn a 2
minute penalty for every minute late. We missed one checkpoint and headed
back before the 3 hours was over to begin the trek to Copper Mountain Resort
area. We climbed to 12,700 feet, dropped down to 11,000 feet towards Copper
Resort. From there we would roller blade back to Frisco which was a fast 10
miles. We transitioned to mountain biking and finished the rain soaked course
just as the sun was beginning to set. We missed one CP resulting in a 2 hour
penalty. The newlyweds on the GoLite pair would take this race!
Thanks to AdventureXstream for putting on such a challenging race.

Kim Bear: No times posted- 3rd/6 women

It was a beautiful day up at the ski area in Albuquerque. The course was the
famous uphill climb to the top of the mountain to see who could reach the top
first. There were just under 100 riders competing for the king of the mountain.
The trails were perfect and we both had a good ride.

We rode the Big "Friggin" Loop on July 7 and it was true to form. (I stopped
saying "friggin" about half way through the ride and just called the loop what it
was!) The race is part of the informal New Mexico off road endurance series.
We started at 6:30 am at the 2nd Street Brewery, rode up to the top of Atalaya,
down the Dale Ball trails, out by the old Cerro Gordo trails, up to the Chamisa
Trail over to Big Tesuque trail, up Aspen Vista, to the towers, back down to
parking lot in the ski area, over to the Winsor trail, the Rio en Medio, Borrego
Trail, Rio Nambe and finally out to the little village of En Medio. We then rode 10
miles up Pacheco Canyon, down the Winsor trail and back to the Chamisa trail.
By then it was 9 at night!!!!!! (Sorry that was so long winded…but it was a very
long ride!) Jan Bear, Gary Johnson and Deb Werenko finished the whole course
by continuing on the Sidewinder trail over to Bishops Lodge and back to the 2nd
street Brewery. Phew!!! Kudos to Deb Werenko for doing every trail that the
"mad man" Matt designed for this informal endurance race. I headed for the
showers at 9 pm while Gary and Deb finished the ride. Jan waited for me at the
pub. Next year I want to do the whole "friggin" course.
