Lisa Carr-Broome 4:17:53; Female 45-49; 72 out of 267
By: George Broome
It was a perfect day for a marathon. The temperature was in the mid 40's as we
lined up in our starting corrals along with 17,000 other runners for the 36th
running of the Houston Marathon. The gun went off at 7:00 AM sharp and the
race was on. The marathon and the half-marathon start on separate parallel
streets and they merge together at mile 2, then the half-marathon peels off at
about mile 9 to finish on a separate route. There was a large crowd lining the
streets and giving the runners much needed encouragement. Lisa had been
nursing a sore hip so she didn't train much in the two weeks prior to the
marathon, but she ran a very consistent race and finished a respectable 2205th
out of 5592 finishers overall. She was the 568th female out of 2091 female
finishers and 72nd out of 267 female finishers in her age group.

George Broome 2:11:13, Male 65-69, 13th out of 43
By: George Broome
The half-marathon this year was huge with close to 10,000 entries and a very
large increase in the number of females running compared to previous years. I
started in the first corral so my chip time was only about a minute less than my
clock time. The cool weather was perfect and I was able to get my usual pace
going and keep it fairly steady throughout the run. The large crowds and the
music gave me encouragement which may have helped my pace just a bit. I
finished feeling like I had emptied most of my energy supply and I crossed the
line 2430th out of 8306 finishers. I was 1510th out of 3401 male finishers and 13th
out of 43 male finishers in my age group. My time was 5 minutes off of my best
time which was two years ago.
"The Wall" - The Louisiana 30K State Championship
East Bank Bridge Recreation Park, Destrehan, LA

Under clear blue skies, but with temperatures in the 30s and strong
winds which caused the temperatures to plummet to 18F wind chill, more
than 500 runners gathered on top of the Mississippi River Levee for the
mass start of the 10K, 30K, and 30K relay of the "The Wall".
The course is fast, rather flat (we descended and ascended the levee
twice), and out and back atop the Levee. However, there is no shelter
from the elements and there was a brutal 20 mph headwind for 9 miles to
the turnaround. The race lets you change distance, so many who began the
30K opted for the 10K after fighting the wind. That relentless headwind
zapped strength but once the hairpin turn was made, pace picks up ~30
sec/mile! I finished significantly slower than in previous years but
enjoyed running with folks and chatting to help fight the wind. It was
sufficient for 38/129 overall, 7/38 F, 1st F 50+.
The New Orleans Track Club (NOTC) always puts on great races;
miles marked, plenty of aid stations and volunteers, and tasty red
beans and rice plus other goodies at the finish.
Thanks to Polar Heart Rate systems for keeping me on pace and to Thorlo for
padding my feet.

Jan Bear, 1st age division out of 7 racers, 9 laps: 10:51
Kim Bear, 2nd age division out of 2 racers, 8 laps 10:07

This was our second year to do this endurance race. Last year was cold, and this
year was forecasted to be just as cold with rain. We went with all our gear and
warm clothes. This year was surprisingly warmer and it did not rain until the sun
went down around 5:30 pm. There were more riders this year which it made it
fun. This was to be Jan's first race since breaking his hip at Leadville in August.
The race turned out to be a really good experience. We hung out with Robyn
Benicasa and her great fiancé Jeff who was racing as well, but still did all the
support! Dale Blankenship was part of our gang, so it was an adventure racing
reunion. Ries and Jen Robinson even drove to the event with their kids and
waited as we each completed a lap to say "hello".
The race organizer changed the trail from last year. It still was around 10.3 miles
with fewer hike-a-bike sections. However they still kept at least 1,498 feet of
ascending. They cut in some single track which was really fun during the
daylight. At night and in the rain, it was a bit more challenging.
Jan ended up winning his age division and I came in second. I was very thankful
at night for the lights that my teammates, Angie and Helen, back in New Mexico
had lent me. They really helped and this year I am proud to say I did not fall.
This is really a fun race which is early in the season. We will plan to do it again
next year!

Mardi Gras Mambo 10K
Baton Rouge, LA

Barb Dutrow 45:43 7th F overall, 1st F50+
Mardi Gras came early this year and with it, the now popular Mardi Gras
Mambo. Mambo takes place the Saturday before culmination of the local
season and the accompanying parades. Sponsored by the Baton Rouge
Foundation and the Belle of Baton Rouge, there are plenty of goodies, an
indoor atrium for waiting out the race and enjoying the awards
celebration and party, and warm, flush toilets. The race runs from the
Belle downtown, past an old Plantation, through LSU, and returns along
River Road adjacent to the Mississippi River levee. Weather is typically
never nice and this year was no exception. Gray, cold, misty, and a bit
breezy - the rain started along the last mile of the race. The generous
race support provided for over 30 police officers on the course;
every intersection was secured from traffic and nasty dogs. This course
has a few rises, plenty of potholes, but is fast. With the large purse,
$500 for overall winners, many fast out-of-town runners swelled the
numbers to around 800. The first five men finished in under 32:00
minutes with the first woman at 34:10. This race also served as the
Louisiana senior Olympics and a qualifier for nationals - our oldest
runner was 84. After the race, was a great party with jambalaya, King
Cake, beer and other beverages along with awards.
Thanks to Polar Heart Rate systems for keeping me on track, and to
Thorlo for padding my feet.
