The 5th race for the New Mexico off Road Series was the Sandia Peak
Challenge. One lap was 16.6 miles. Everyone had to do one lap except for the
pro/expert group who had to do 2 laps or 33.2 miles. As usual, I was always
happy to only have to do one lap. The race started around 12:30 pm with nice
weather for riding. This event is to raise money for cystic fibrosis so activities
had been going on all morning.
The route for a lap lead you up the more technical climbing of the King of the
Mountain trail to the very top of Sandia Peak and then back down the easier
Golden Eagle trail. Both Jan and I were happy with this race; last year it was
only the King of the Mountain trail and we are better at downhill riding. We
enjoyed the ride and look forward to next year.

Team Santa Fe Bear Pair, Jan and Kim Bear
Finish Time: 27 hours and 20 minutes, 1st Coed Pairs, 7th Overall
By Kim Bear
We had only been back from Switzerland for 2 days before having to travel to
Colorado for this race. We were a bit jetlagged, but knew there were only 2
pairs racing and wanted to participate in this race which I think is one of the
hardest in this series. The race began at midnight on Friday at the Frisco Nordic
Center with a short run to the marina where we picked up our boats (just like last
2 years). We made it back to the marina around 5:00 am. The checkpoints had
been placed much further down the inlets on Dillon Reservoir as compared to
previous years so we were paddling longer. We were warm on the water for the
first couple of hours, because of cloud cover but as the night drew on the wind
picked up and we ended up getting chilled on the run back to the transition at the
Frisco Nordic Center. We transitioned out of our truck and proceeded to the
orienteering section on the peninsula. We had 4 hours to get 30 checkpoints.
Each checkpoint missed would bring a 10 minute penalty. We got all the
checkpoints and proceeded to the trek to from Frisco to Breckenridge. We took
off on the 15 mile trek using the Miners Creek Trail which turned into Wheeler;
we then hiked down into Breckenridge winding up by Beaver Run. From there we
hiked through town until we found our rollerblade transition area in the City
Market parking lot. It began to rain as we rollerbladed back to the Frisco Nordic
Center. At the transition Jan got the additional checkpoints which he plotted out
in the truck to keep dry. We finally left on the bike leg as it stopped raining. We
gambled and went for 4 checkpoints, so we could ride very nice single track in
daylight. We finished around 7:30 pm as were happy to return to our hotel room
to watch the time trial in the Tour de France. It was not until 5 days later that the
penalties were calculated and our gamble paid off. We had a great nights sleep
and were lucky enough to hold on to first position for the coed pairs.
Thanks to AdventureXstream for putting on such a challenging race.

Team RHOC Santa Fe, Carl Gable, Joel Krypel, Bill Roth, Tina Sommer
Finish Time: 9:08, 2nd place, 4 person coed
By Carl Gable
This would be the first AR for Bill and Tina. Bill had crewed for us
at Primal Quest and done lots of training with Joel and I so he knew what
he was getting into. This race was a really good first race. The paddle was
not too long and the conditions were calm. We had not practiced any paddling
so we came out of the water pretty far back. We had a quick transition to
the bikes. The ride up the paved bike trail was pretty darn easy. Just crusing
along with all the tourists. The single track was pretty rocky but so short
that it did not amount to much. The orienteering section was a lot of fun.
It was all on a point of land that sticks into the lake. There were 30 points
so we were picking them of every 10 minutes or so. I really enjoy these high
speed orienteering courses since the rewards come so quickly and often. Tina
and Bill both did great. We stayed strong all the way to the finish line.
