It's always fun to do some orienteering at the Doc Long Campground as the area is full of
trails, very steep terrain and lots of similar terrain features making any event there
interesting. As a matter of fact the last time I did some orienteering at Doc Long's with my
family I got totally turned around and we ran out of time to even finish the course. So I
was happy to be back for another challenge. I did very well in the first ¾ of the course but
had some difficulty with the last couple of check points that I'm sure cost me the win. But
the weather was great and as always the NM Orienteer's do a great job putting on their
monthly events.

Wow! This was a fun race. First…Lance Armstrong was there. Here is a video of the
exciting race between Dave Wiens the 5 time winner of Leadville and Lance:

Rain was predicted, but we all came prepared with rain gear still remembering the
hypothermic producing rains from several years back. Team Santa Fe members at the
start line were Jan and Kim Bear, Lisa and George Broome, and Gary Johnson. There
were a lot more riders at the start line which kept racers around me the whole race. I
ended up riding on and off with my women friends from Santa Fe and Colorado. They
would pass me on the climbs and then I would find them after the descents.
The other thing that helped make this grueling race more entertaining was watching
Lance and Dave racing down the mountain. I was just beginning the grind up to
Columbine at this point. It took my mind off the climb for a short while. The weather
slowly rolled in throughout the day with a thunder/rain storm hitting about the time we
reached the "power line" on our return. Jan got caught in it, but I just got slightly wet with
the shower. By then I was riding with my friend from Santa Fe and we agreed to stay
together. This pushed me to the finish. It made for a good race to cross the finish line
together. This was my 11th year to successfully finish, so I got the big jacket and was
lucky enough to place 2nd in my age division of 50-59. Gary and Jan finished strongly
under the 10 hour mark. Jan got rid of his demons from the previous year after breaking
his hip. He finished with all of his bones intact!
George and Lisa Broome decided that they had enough and called it a day.

This was the first time I had done this race in Silver City. Jan raced in 2006 after a big
rain storm; this year would be dry and pleasant. The race immediately started with a
steep climb to a forest road. For the women sport division we would be riding 20 miles
and Jan would ride 24 miles. The sport women did not have to make the complete climb
to Signal Peak and got to cut it off with a nice single track section. The track was a
combination of single track, jeep roads, rocky terrain, climbs with fast downhill's. Jan and
I both enjoyed the race. The finish was under a big manikin who looked like a mountain
man with a celtic skirt on. It was fun and well organized. For winning the sport division
overall, I also received a "head" which looked like a decapitated mountain man…it had
bike tracks over the bald head. It was a very unique prize that I am planning on using on
Halloween.

Tucson Heart Group Cinco de Mayo 10k

The Cinco de Mayo 10K has a long tradition in Tucson, this was the 28th running.
Courses have changed over time, with this courses being
the the "most scenic 10K" in Tucson. It begins at Cholla High School and winds through
Starr Pass in the foothills of the
Tucson Mountains with views of the Tuscon Basin and uninhabited desert regions. Of
course it also winds through subdivisions. The early morning start time of 7am, assures
that the sun is low, temperatures are cooler, skies are clear, wind is calm, and
landscapes glowing. As with any out and back course on roads, there were many
potholes, a lot of turns, some traffic, but overall a nice course with hills. The best part of
the race is the incredible post-race burritos of many types, complete with Mariachi music,
Starbucks coffee, snacks, and other refreshments! The age group awards were even
purchased in Mexico and included Seri wooden carvings and ceramics of various sorts.
Competition is tough, my time slow (7:46 pace) but sufficient for 3rd in my age division
and 139th of 577 overall.
Thanks to Thorlo for padding my feet.

Trek for Trash
Biking in rural northern New Mexico
August 30 and 31, 2008
Kim and Jan Bear
By Kim Bear
This was a fun way to get in training while feeling good about picking up trash across
New Mexico. Jan and I actually missed the first day which was the Enchanted Circle
Route. On Saturday we started from Taos and biked to Santa Fe on the high road. We
quickly learned that as soon as you got tired, you stopped to pick up trash. We were
spread out along the way to Santa Fe, but would periodically regroup and snack as we
had a sag vehicle. We ended up the day after 80 miles at the Santa Fe Bar and Grill for
dinner. Sunday took us on 103 miles through Angle Fire, Mora and Sipapu. This was a
rainy day which made it challenging, but the trash was still there to get picked up. At the
end, Jan and I both agreed that this event that needs to be done once a year. WE hope
to be back next year for all 3 days and to bring our friends! We collected hundreds of
trash bags with beer bottles, diapers, plastic bags and more. It was sad to realize how
dirty northern New Mexico is, but at the same time what a beautiful state we live in, we
just need to keep it clean!
Special thanks to Gary Johnson for putting on this event. He has actually been doing it for
about 15 years.
