The Road Apple Rally Mountain Bike Race would be the 28th anniversary of what is billed
as the longest on-going mountain bike race in the world. It was a group start for Expert
and Sport categories; both groups did long course which was a 29 mile long course. It is
a mixture of dirt roads, paved roads, ridge backs, trails and the "whoops". It was a fast
course with lots of single track. The weather was a little overcast so it was a nice day.
Last year I really did not enjoy this race. First, Jan was not with me because of his
broken hip. Second, I was not prepared for the whoops. This is single track that makes
your bike want to catch air and I am not that comfortable with handling that type of trail.
This year, I was prepared and really enjoyed the whole race. I ended up placing first of
all the women in sport so I won my age group. I won the NMORS jersey for the season
which was my goal for last year, so I was glad to finally get "the jersey!" Jan was still
recovering from the AdventureXtreme race in Moab, so was happy with 4th.

This was the second running of the Pajarito Trail Runs. Last year I did not
run. Instead I ran the aid station at the top of Pajarito Mt (PJ). This year
no aid station but I did mark part of the course. After work on Friday I
went up and hiked to the top of PJ and marked the single track route down.
It was perhaps not the best rest to hike up and down a ski hill 12 hours
before the race start but I enjoyed it none the less. Race day looked like
it was going to rain, but it held off for the start. The beginning of the
race takes a fairly direct path up the ski area so it is steep and tiring.
After that there are ups and downs, but nothing as steep or long. The race
went well, I found a groove and never felt any fade. The weather continued
to thicken and at one point on the return the lightning and thunder were
less than a second apart indicating the lighting was less than a 1/4 mile
away. That helped motivate me. The rain and hail also were motivational.
I mostly beat the worst weather. The people behind me were caught in torrential
rain and hail. Fortunately the ski lodge was the race headquarters so it
was comfortable to hang out and watch the dramatic weather from a warm dry
spot.
The race was lots of fun and really well run. Petra McDowell did a great
job with race organization and the post race raffle prizes were really nice.

Jan Bear 9th Place in the 50 mile event, 5:21.
By Jan Bear
What a great venue! Fifty miles of single track, WOW. I glad the weather was good as I
know that it can get very cold in this part of NM in October but it was a beautiful day with
temperatures in the 50's and 60's with mostly sunny skies. The course was well marked
but there were a couple times when a wrong turn was made. The course was lots of fun
and generally fast but there were short technical sections that made the event really fun. I
rode with a couple different people and it was nice to chat with them over the miles,
especially when we go lost! I've really enjoyed the NM Endurance Series Events and
hope to do a couple more next year.

Jan & Kim Bear, 3rd Place 780 Points, 2nd Place in the 40+ Division.

I'm glad that Kim and I got to do this together, we have not been able to do it as a team in
the past as one or the other of us has always had something else to do the day of the
event. This year the weather was perfect and there was some newly mapped areas to
add some challenge to the course. Also the distances were generally fairly long so the
strategy was important. We didn't know it but the reining US Champion in the 60+ age
group was racing along side us and beat us! The check points were challenging and there
were a couple that several of us did not find. All in all we were happy with our result and
headed back to Santa Fe to get ready for the mountain bike race the next day. The NM
Orienteer's out did themselves with this Rogaine as it was well organized as always and a
great event.

Kim (5:25) and Jan Bear (4:56) informally finished
By Kim Bear
This was an inaugural race. Jan and I were excited to ride this area of Santa Fe as we
have not mountain biked much on the west side of town. At the start, the race organizer
told us we would be riding the old La Bajada Road. It would turn out to be the high point
of the race. There were 7 of us at the start. I rode with one of my friends and Jan ended
up riding with the other part of the group. The pressure was off and we just had fun. It
ended up being about 50 miles by my odometer. We enjoyed the course, were
challenged by the wind on the mesa and ended up with a pair of socks. Jan really
enjoyed the route and plans on doing it again next year. Times and places were not
formally tallied.
