2008 Arizona Endurance Series
December 13, 2008
Jan and Kim Bear- informal results: 11th and 12th in 4:32
By Kim Bear
The Arizona Endurance Series keeps it mission simple: to inspire people to ride.
They inspired us to drive out to find some sunshine and warm riding weather. It
also promised to give us an idea of what riding was like in Southern Arizona. The
riding is certainly different with more rock, not much shade, steep ups and downs
but fortunately short ups, technical sections in loose large rocks but all in all
some fun mountain bike riding. The ride was a combination of two popular rides,
the "Greaterville Keyhole" and the "Kentucky Camp/Garner Canyon/Flume trail
rides". Twenty-six riders rallied to this event. We began at 8:30 am. The routes
were along jeep roads with some great single track through grassy meadows.
We had views of the Santa Rita Mountain peaks, grasslands, and ranges. You
could do one or two laps and only one rider chose to do 2 laps. We came in
around the middle of the pack around 1 pm. We downloaded GPS tracks for this
race as it was sure helpful as there were no trail markings and lots of options and
the written instructions were somewhat confusing and the GPS was just the
ticket! We used our Garmin GPSmap 60CSx's and as usual they worked great.
The weather was windy and cool but fine with a long sleeve jersey and light
jacket. The AES riders we met we very nice and riders of about the same pace
hung out together. The organizer of the event even had a schwag bag for
everyone.
It was very different terrain than New Mexico, but Jan really enjoyed it and hopes
to return next year. I enjoyed riding with Jan.

B&K Bank's Goldenfliers 5 and 10 Mile Road Race

Baton Rouge, LA
December 13, 2008
Barb Dutrow 1:15:47 5th F; 1st F50+; 34/536 Overall
The fifth annual Goldenfliers 5 and 10 mile road race begins on the LSU
campus at the alumni center which overlooks the lakes. As such, the winds
howl off the lake and made for a a cold and windy start for the nearly 550
10-milers and the nearly 200 5-milers. Skies were overcast with temperatures
were in the 30s. This cool weather made for very fast times in addition to
the prize money that is offered bringing in great racers from as far as New
York.
The course is the familiar 5 mile path around the University Lakes which
makes for a scenic, but cold, run. The 10 milers do two loops which brings
them back to the start where cheering inspires one to continue, typically
alone as the runners are now spread out. I was simply hoping not to be lapped
by the lead runners - I wasn't but not by much! The first place finisher
completed the 10 miles in 49:39 with six others finishing in under 55 min.
I finished as the 5th female with nearly the same time as three years ago.
Local sponsors provided fabulous awards as well as food, from jambalaya to
coffee.
Thanks to Polar Heart Rate systems, Thorlo sock and CW-X clothing.
BANANA RELAY

Baton Rouge, LA
October 28, 2008
Barb Dutrow and Georgia Wilemon, 1st F/F age 91-110, 2nd F/F overall
After a long absence from the Baton Rouge running scene, the Banana Relay
made i ts comeback. It was originally scheduled for the weekend that Hurricane
Gustav h it, so after many attempts, it was finally rescheduled. This year
the race was held on the grounds of Pennington Biomedical Research Center
which was terrific as there was no traffic nor need for dangerous street
crossings. The course consisted of 4 loops for a total of 10K. Each person
ran two loops alternating, passing the banana between each loop. This year's
race organizers eliminated one of the main obsticles to finishing, that is,
returning with the banana. They kindly purchased green, hard bananas which
made passing easy and took away the challenge of only gently holding a ripe
banana. No banana remains, having been squeezed out, cluttered the course
nor made for slippery running. Our ages and times were added together for
the final outcome.
Thanks to CW-X and Thorlo for racing attire.
