I was asked by the Santa Fe Striders to help with the Santa Fe Snow Shoe Classic this
year, I have done so in the past but missed last years event so this was a great
opportunity to help out again with a fun event. This year the snow was excellent and the
course had been very nicely prepared by Dave Wyckoff. The Nordic Loop near the Santa
Fe Ski Basin is the area that is used for this race with a loop length of about 4K. There
are some gentle up and down grades and areas in the shade but more out in the sun.
The snow cover was beautiful with about 8 inches of fresh snow falling the night before
the race. About 60 people took part in the race split almost equally between the 5 and
10K events. The day started off cold but as the sun came up the temperature also came
up and it was a beautiful day. All of the participants had fun. The prizes as well as the
raffle prizes were welcomed by nearly all the race participants. I enjoyed getting to walk
the course early race day morning putting up the directional ribbons. Despite the fact that
I won't be doing the Mount Taylor Quadrathalon this year it was a great opportunity to do
some snow shoe racing.

Kim Bear: Women Sport Solo 9 laps (10:53); 1st of 5 Sport Women
Jan Bear: Solo Master 50-59 12 laps (11:39); 1st of 6 Solo Master Men
By Kim Bear
This was the third time for us to compete in this race. This year there seemed to a lot
more racers; it turned out to be the biggest crowd both in terms of spectators and racers
in this race's history. It was warmer than it had been in previous years both at check in
and during the race. It had rained the day before making the single track even more fun.
It would turn out to be a perfect day for mountain bike racing at Vail Lake Resort.
The race started at 9 am with everyone doing a winding lap around the campground and
then heading out across an arroyo, onto a fire road then rolling ridgelines, zigzag single
track and occasional steep climbs. It was 1359 feet in elevation over 9.1 miles. The
racers were very friendly making the race even more fun.
We didn't have any support so I wasn't aware of how I was doing. I didn't have to stop
until after the 4th lap. I really credit that with using Hammer Perpeteum in my camelback.
It really helped keep me from bonking. After the first 4 laps, I stopped every other lap just
to clean and oil my chain as the course kicked up quite a bit of dirt on to the drive train. I
noticed that everyone seemed to be riding with a lot of noise coming from their chains by
the time the sun set. Lights were mandatory at 5pm. I was trying out the Princeton Tec
Switchback 3 light. Two years ago I had a bad fall during night time laps and so I really
wanted a good light to build my confidence back up. I think this light is going to work
great for me. It really projected onto the trail and helped make me decide to do an extra
lap at night. I think this helped me win the sport division. Jan did the same thing…he
went for the extra lap which also help him clench the win for his solo men 50-59 division.
These lights are great with more than adequate burn time from the battery. We are
looking forward to using them at the 24 hours of Old Pueblo next month.

This was the first year for the Bear family to run the Arizona Rock 'n' Roll ½ Marathon.
With both daughters in college, it was a great way to end our winter break before they
went back. We were overwhelmed with 35,000 entrants starting from the registration in
the convention center, to waiting 30 minutes to cross the start line. There were
people/runners everywhere. It did make it fun to know that we would not be last. Jan
was placed in a corral that left 20 minutes before the girls. He ended up with a great time
of 1:50:58, considering he had just broken his hip last year and was now nursing a
herniated disc. We were really proud of him. The girls and I enjoyed the bands every
mile, sight seeing as we ran through Tempe and especially running at sea level. This is
definitely an event that we plan to repeat!

NM Orienteers Winter X-Country Ski and Snow Shoe Race
Valle Grande, NM

Jan and Kim Bear 1:37:50, 3rd Place Long Course
By Jan Bear
This annual event in the Valle Grande is one that for many is the highlight of the year.
The Valle Grande is only open a couple times a year to the public so this event is a great
opportunity to visit this beautiful area. The day before the race I was able to visit the site
to help vet one of the courses allowing me to get a double dose of the Valle Grande this
year as I missed last years race. Kim and I did the race together on snow shoes. The
snow was plentiful but crusty and hard yet the weather was beautiful. The crusty snow
made it almost impossible to run in the snow shoes. We did the long course on snow
shoes and really only made one mistake and it was my fault I mistakenly thought that one
the map sites was a control point but it really was a bridge across the Jemez River. It took
me about five minutes to recognize my mistake and move on. The rest of the course was
uneventful. The course was about 8K long with only 70 meters of elevation gain and had
12 control points to identify. After we finished the race we went back out and picked up
some of the controls for the NM Orienteers.
