This was spring break for my daughters, Sam and JJ, who both attend the
University of New Mexico and me as I work at Santa Fe community college.
We decided to spend the break at Lake Havasu, AZ and do an Olympic distance
triathlon. It was a 1500 meter swim in the lake, a 40 kilometer bike route
along the lake's shoreline, and a 10 k run. Sam and JJ would be racing
for the University of New Mexico and I would be supporting them as I raced.
It would be a first tri experience for Sam and the second for JJ. The
weather was in the 80s. We arrived a couple days before the race and were
able to try out our wetsuits in the lake and pre-ride the bike course.
On race day we started in waves. The girls started 10 minutes before me.
We swam to the London Bridge and back to the beach. From there we transitioned
onto our bikes and rode into the neighborhoods along the lake with lots
of big hills. It was fun and fast. At the end of the bike, all 3 of us
ended up in the transition area together. We took off on the run together.
The route led us across the London Bridge as it was an out-and-back course.
We ended up crossing the finish line together. We had a great time and
look forward to doing another triathlon together again soon.

This years Coyote Classic was held on the other side of the Franklin Mountains
near El Paso, Texas. I made the trip to El Paso with my brother Todd; it
was a reunion for us to get to go to a race together as we have not been
able to race together the last few years as he has been very busy with
work and family. Todd and I had done several adventure races in years past
so the drive to El Paso and back was enjoyable as we were able to reminisce
about races years ago. Racing in El Paso presents a unique set of challenges
everything off the trail is hard (rock) or sharp (cacti) so staying focused
is important. The new course on the east side of the mountains was similar
to the other side with lots of winding single track mixed with climbing
and sharp little descents. The course length was about 24 miles for the
Cat 1 and Pro racers. The route was fast for some riders but I struggled
to keep up a good pace despite using my HRM. Todd had trouble with the sharp
stuff and had 4 flats. The weather however was great not to hot but warm
and the wind didn't pick up to much until we were done. Once done we had
a nice ride home, more talking and planning for our next event together.

Team Santa Fe Bear Pair: Kim and Jan Bear 3rd/20 coed pairs 6:16:00
By Kim Bear
This was the first race of the AdventureXstream series for 2009. Jan and
I have always come in third in this race. It is a fast race with little
navigating/orienteering. This year would be no different. It began with
dropping off our paddle equipment the night before the race. This year
the start was staggered with each division starting separately. We would
leave with the pair category behind the four person teams and soloists on
our mountain bikes. We started out with Carl and Joel from Team Santa Fe
and worked a pace line on the paved road until we got to the turn off for
Long Canyon. It was a great start. I let Jan tow me from the get go.
It really seemed to work for us. We then took off onto the dirt for the
long climb out of the canyon to Gemini Bridges. We got passed by a pair
from Colorado on the climb. At the rappel section, we probably had a 15
minute wait. It was a quick, fast, and fun descent into the canyon floor
about 300 feet. We took off on the six mile run/jog out of the canyon and
saw that there was another pair ahead of us putting us in third. The weather
was warming up and we finally arrived back at our bikes. We rode to the
paddle put in. We would log in about 33 miles on our bikes. The paddle
was about 12 miles on flat water. We finished in 6:16:00 holding on to
a third place finish.

This was the first race of the season for Joel and I after a long and
active ski season. While we have done the expedition lenght Moab race, neither
of us had done the 12 hour Moab race. Also, we have nearly always raced on
four person teams, so the two person team was new to us. Overall the day went
well. It was fun to start out with Jan and Kim but they dropped us quickly
on the bike ride. It was a perfect day, temperature in the sixties, clear
skies with the rocks of Moab in the foreground and the snow covered La Sal
mountains in the background. Now on to Buena Vista.
