Kim
Bear is a family nurse practitioner married to Jan and mother
of two daughters. She has been involved in competing in local
multisport and mountain biking races since 1992.
When she was 14 years
old she was involved in a motorcycle accident and ended up having
her knee cap removed as well as having a fractured femur and jaw
which kept her in hospital for three months. She got into fun
runs and riding bikes to keep her leg strong. In nursing school
she was on the swim team at the University of New Mexico.
She considered herself
a "fun" athlete until attempting the Leadville 100 Mountain
Bike Race in 1995. Going to Leadville, Colorado has been an annual
event and in 2000 she placed second in her age division, the previous
year placing third in her division. Also in 2000, she and Jan
were also the first husband and wife team to complete both the
Leadville 100 mile mountain bike race and then one week later,
the 100 mile run. This yearly endurance event led her to Adventure
Racing.
She finally did her
first race with Team Santa Fe at a Four Winds Mountain Rage race
in May and ended up doing the next two races with the team placing
in an overall standing of third place. She is very excited to
be able to compete in the next Eco-Challenge in New Zealand.
