Punishment indeed! Pajarito is a great mountain bike race, very tough,
lots of single track climbing as well as steep rocky single track
descents. It is part of the New Mexico Off Road Series that includes
events all across New Mexico. Race day was beautiful, warm but not too
hot and had a nice breeze, unfortunately that didn’t make the race any
easier for me. I really had a tough race and the 2X10 gearing I had
selected just didn’t give me a low enough climbing gear for the second
lap. This race has a start loop of about six and one half miles, out on
to the cross country ski trails and then heads back to the downhill ski
area for a traverse on a rough single-track trail. Then it’s all up
hill till we get to the top of Pajarito Mountain on all single track,
then a quick fun decent only to climb to the top for a second time. The
big climb is only a short three and one half miles and one thousand
feet of climbing. Once at the top on lap two I realized that I was
cooked, made it to the finish but certainly really tired. The event
really lives up to it’s name but it was a great day of riding and there
was a great turn out and all that raced really had a good time,
especially the Cat 3 group that didn’t have to climb to the top of the
mountain.
24 Hours
in the Enchanted Forest, Mountain Bike Race
Gallup, NM

1st Place Duo
Men 18 laps

The first annual 24 hours in the Enchanted forest was held June 19 and
20 in McGaffey, NM, near Gallup. This was the first 24 hour race held
in NM, put on by the same promoter that puts on the Dawn til Dusk in
Gallup, NM. The race was a fund raiser for the CFID, chronic fatigue
syndrome. I teamed up with a friend for the Male Duo class. About 235
racers, 100 teams started the race.
We reserved one of the Primo Pits right on the course for an extra $20.
It was worth every cent as we were right on the race course and could
do transitions at camp. There was no waiting around the transition area
wondering when your partner would come in. We could see the end of the
course from our camp. So we always had about a minute of warning for
the transitions.
We had a stellar support crew consisting of my wife, my partner's wife,
and my kids.
Conditions at the start were sunny, windy, and hot. Unlike the Dawn til
Dusk race, this race is held in the forested mountains above Gallup.
The trees did a great job of providing shade and blocking the wind.
They also provided a spectacular setting for a 24 hour race with 16
miles of single track with 1150 feet of climbing. As the trail was 95%
single track, I was concerned that passing riders might be an issue, it
was not. Even on the single track there was plenty of room to get by
lapped rider. The riding is unlike any I have done in New Mexico. It
consisted of winding forested single track, gentle climbs, and some
long gradual downhills.
We had set our goals pretty high for this race. The first lap was a
somewhat shortened loop with a long section of dirt road thrown in to
spread the field out. My partner Aaron started the race. He came in
slightly under an hour. He was one of the first 4 cyclists to come
through the transition, as we transitioned, he said another men’s duo
team was right behind him. We rode consistent laps varying from 1:09 to
1:28. Our last four laps were all right around 1:20.
I did have one technical issue when I broke a derailleur near then end
of my second lap. The bike was rideable so I was able to finish the lap
and then I switched to my backup bike for the rest of the race.
After the 1/2 point of the race we were at over a lap up on our
competition in the Men's Duo. At that point we were running 3rd overall
of all the teams. We started to focus on the overall place as we
appeared to have the Men's Duo wrapped up. We were passed in our final
lap by a 4 man team and slipped to fourth overall. We ended up
completing 18 laps.
It was a great way to celebrate my first Father's day and we will
definitely be back next year.

This 24-hour-race was staged out of Durango Mountain Resort. It started
at midnight with the 9 UTM coordinates handed out for the night time
orienteering at the start. We could go in any order, but only one
checkpoint was mandatory which was located at the Hermosa Creek
Trailhead. Jan plotted right on the plaza and we took off straight up
the ski slopes. The orienteering course had 9 Checkpoints and we needed
to be back to the plaza by 10 am the next morning or penalties would be
accrued. The trekking would be about 27 miles this year. We both felt
good and moved quicker than we have in the past. However, it still felt
like we were in last as we saw few people on the course. We ended up
working most of the night with a soloist, but never saw any of the
other couples that we were competing against. We ended up running out
of time and had to miss 2 of the 9 checkpoints. We ran back down to the
plaza to prepare for the biking portion.
At around 10 am we rode out of the resort area to head down to Hermosa
Creek trail. As we had done this race on 4 other years, I could tell
that this was my best bike. I felt really good and so did Jan. However,
as we raced across the trail to get to the Tyrolean traverse we only
saw couples who were doing the 12 hour race. Again, this gave us the
impression that we were behind our competition. We got the Tyrolean
traverse and had to wait for about 15 minutes to get on the ropes. We
got to see Joel and Carl as they had just completed the ropes and were
taking off to the river. After the traverse we rode to the river, got
into the boats and started the very long paddle to town. The river was
low this year making it tricky to get through some of the sections.
After 17 miles of paddling, we finally reached the finish line. At that
point, we had no idea how we did, it would depend on penalties and how
the other pairs faired. When the results came out we were surprised to
see that we were in first. However, we both felt really good with this
race so I was pleased that our results reflected our performance.
