Kayaking leg, Lake Superior
2003 Eco-North America Championship


Barb Dutrow's adventure racing highlights include successful finishes in the grueling 1996 Eco-Challenge expedition race in British Columbia, Canada (one of only 14 teams of 72 to finish) and the expedition length 2002 Subaru Primal Quest in 28th place. She also finished 14th in the 2001 USARA National Championships race. In 2003, her team was 11th place when time ran out - a 350 Km course turned 350 miles (only 3 teams finished) at the Eco-North American Championships held in Sault St. Marie, Canada.

She enjoys long distance running, competing in marathons and ultras. Her top running finishes include:

  •    Overall winner - 1999 Wilderness 50K 
  •    Overall female winner:
    • 2000 Rocky Racoon 50K
    • 2003 Great Mississippi Levee 50K
    • 1992 Summer Biathlon;
  •     3rd place female - 2003 Carl Touchstone Mississippi Trail 50 mile run   
  •     Masters winner :
    •  2000 Pikes Peak marathon,
    • 1999 Duke City Marathon
    • 1998 Tucson Marathon
  •     2nd place Master - 1996 Sunmart 50K
  •     placing in the top 30 female Masters in 5 Boston Marathons
    • with times of 3:14, 3:15, 3:16, 3:18

and numerous age group awards at marathons (2003 Big Sur, 7th place overall, 1st age),  ultras and duathlons.  She also loves water sports, spending her childhood  summers water skiing and boating. More recently, she participated in an 18 day raft trip through the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River and  7 days  traversing class 3+ rapids in a single person inflatable kayak through the Middle Fork of the Salamon River, Idaho.

Her most notable adventure racing feat was fracturing her arm on day 3 of SPQ 2002. She continued on for several more days of racing that included white water kayaking, mountain biking and a 400 foot rappel.

Her adventure racing foundation comes from over 25 years of  being a geologist and traveling to explore mountains of around the world, rock climbing, biking and white water rafting.  She has a Ph.D. in geology and is currently the Adolphe G. Gueymard Professor of Geology at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. For information related to professional activities see the LSU web page http://www.geol.lsu.edu/dutrow.
